Media Release Cyclists oppose global nuclear partnership For immediate release 20 July 2007 Tomorrow a group of cyclists will converge on the Brisbane Liberal party headquarters to indicate their opposition to the Howard govenrment's reported intention to join the Global Nulcear Energy Partnership (GNEP). They arrive at the Liberal HQ from 1030am as part a campaign called Cycle Against the Nuclear Cycle (CANC). The partnership seeks to expand the nuclear power industry globally. "It is a US-led, elite club designed to control the production of nuclear fuel and disposal of the world's nuclear waste' says CANC cyclist Beck Pearse. "Australia's involvement in the GNEP is another warning that Australia might become the world's nuclear dumping ground. The Howard government's track record of secrecy concerning it's nuclear intentions indicate that this is still a possibility" says CANC cyclist Georgina Pike. CANC calls for the Liberal government to make public all plans to participate in the global nuclear fuel cycle. "This is an election issue. Australian communities have a right to know if the Howard government is intending to transpsort this dangerous industry into our backyard" says Beck Pearse. Tomorrow's event is part of CANC's epic journey to promote a nuclear free future in Australia. CANC passes through the east and south coasts of Australia. The 45000km ride began on the 25 th June from Rockhampton, Queensland and will continue to Canberra and beyond.
