On 26th July thirty cyclists are riding through Byron Bay to Lismore to promote a nuclear free future in Australia. It is part of their epic journey to Canberra and beyond. Cycle Against the Nuclear Cycle (CANC) passes through regions which are likely to host nuclear reactors if Australia chooses to adopt nuclear power. They are passing through the home town of the youngest CANC rider 11 month Hope Thompson and her mum Valerie.

"Nuclear power is no solution to climate change", Valerie says. "It's too slow, too dangerous and too expensive."

The 4500km ride began on the 25th June from Rockhampton. Amongst the group is 66 yr old Great Grandmother, June Norman.

June says "50 years of the nuclear industry and there is still no solution to the intractable problem of nuclear waste. Worse still, it is highly likely that waste material will eventually end up in weapons".

CANC is in Byron/Lismore promoting sustainable energy and transport.

"Clean, sustainable energy production is here and ready to go now. We need funding for development of renewables, not reactors," says cyclist Beck Pearse. "We invite interested locals to meet us or join our colourful fleet of cyclists for a while."

All are welcome to ride with the group and join the campaign for as little or as long as they like. CANC will arrive at Byron Bay for a film screening at the Youth Access Centre. The Film, A Hard Rain is made by award winning documentary maker David Bradbury.

The meeting point for the ride to Lismore is 9am Byron Bay Peace Pole Thursday 26th July.
