Cycle Against the Nuclear Cycle (CANC) passes through regions which are likely to host nuclear reactors if Australia chooses to adopt nuclear power. On 24th of August a team of cyclists will be joined by local community members on a ride through Wollongong to promote a nuclear free future in Australia. It is part of their epic journey from Rockhampton to Canberra and beyond to talk with communities about nuclear as an unsuitable solution to climate change.

The issue is of concern to locals as Port Kembla meets the requirements for a future nuclear reactor site. "Nuclear power is no solution to climate change", local resident Lisette Salkavich says. "It's too slow, too dangerous and too expensive."

Rider Bek Pearse says "50 years of the nuclear industry and there is still no solution to the intractable problem of nuclear waste. Worse still, it is highly likely that waste material will eventually end up in weapons".

CANC is in Wollongong promoting sustainable energy and transport. "Clean, sustainable energy production is here and ready to go now. We need funding for development of renewables, not reactors," says cyclist Georgina Pike. "We invite interested locals to meet us or join our colourful fleet of cyclists for a while."

All are welcome to ride with the group and join the campaign for as little or as long as they like. CANC will arrive at Wollongong for a film screening at the University of Wollongong. The Film, ‘Climate of Hope’ is made by Australian Scott Ludlum and will be followed by a discussion on the nuclear issue.

The meeting point for the ride is the Wollongong Lighthouse at 4pm for a ride through the city.
