As they pass through Sydney on their way to Canberra, a group of dedicated anti-nuclear cyclists will be holding a demonstration outside the Lucas Heights Nuclear Reactor at 9.30am today. The Cycle Against the Nuclear Cycle (CANC) has been cycling from Rockhampton to raise awareness about the nuclear industry and to encourage people to oppose the undemocratic imposition of the nuclear cycle on their communities.

"After almost fifty years of operation, successive governments have failed to find a way to safely isolate the waste produced by the Lucas Heights reactor, for the 250 000 years it will remain radioactive," said CANC spokesperson Georgina Pike.

"Lucas Heights is a small research reactor. If no solution can be found to its waste, where on earth will the waste from 25 large scale nuclear power plants be stored?", asked Ms Pike.

"We have serious concerns that the Northern Territory is being lined up to become Australia's nuclear waste dump. Rather than providing much needed services, the Howard government is taking control of indigenous land in the Northern Territory. This exposes the government's real agenda - to facilitate the expansion of uranium mining and to facilitate the dumping of nuclear waste."

The group will then continue their journey down the east coast, campaigning to promote the smart energy solutions that are needed to avoid both dangerous climate change and dangerous nuclear waste.

The action at Lucas Heights is running parallel, and in support of, a picket of John Howard's Phillip Street office at 1pm today. Speakers, including Dr Helen Caldicott, members of the Maritime Union of Australia and members of the Sydney Nuclear Free Coalition, will be speaking out against Prime Minister Howard's intervention in the Northern Territory and against any agreements made at APEC to expand the nuclear industry.
